The Hospital Punch Card

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Tuesday evening I met Lindy and the kids at my parents place for dinner…at least that was the plan. But, as with most plans, our was about to change.  Seems that Jack had gotten a hold of a tiny little battery from some thing at the house, and it couldn’t be accounted for. Our fear was that Jack had swallowed it. Batteries not being the best thing for the digestive system, I followed the well worn path to Holland Hospital and got in line for an x-ray. Oddly enough, the x-ray came and showed…nothing…nothing in his belly except for all the normal bits that are in a baby’s belly. No battery. I don’t know yet what that little trip cost us, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing a bill soon.

To add insult to injury, the offending battery was eventually found in the cuff of Emma’s shorts. So there ya go.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that this will be the last trip to the hospital for a while.

ER. Again.

Another afternoon spent in the ER…this time with Jack. Here’s how it went down.

I’ll spare you all the details, but suffice it to say that we found Jack with an open bottle of Tylenol PM, and were unable to determine how many he ate, if any. He was acting fine of course, but we played it safe and called Poison Control. Poison Control urged us to go to the ER since we couldn’t definitively account for every last pill from the bottle. So, I rushed home from work, packed him up, and headed to Holland Hospital. By the time we were seen, it had been a couple of hours since the incident occurred, and he wasn’t showing any adverse affects. He was sleepy, but it was precisely his nap time, so that was not out of the ordinary. The Dr said that if he had taken two to four pills, he’d be out cold by that point. Poison control advised that they watch us for two more hours to make sure his condition didn’t change, so that’s what they did. They hooked him up to a monitor so they could keep an eye on his heart, then turned out the lights so we could take a little snooze. I finally got him to fall asleep on me in the hospital bed, and I flipped on the TV and watched the Tour de France. A pretty relaxing afternoon if you take out the anxiety of whether or not Jack had been poisoned.

He was released after a couple of hours as good as new, and I suspect we’ll get a bill in a few weeks stating that our little nap time comes with a $100 copay.

Website Changes Coming Soon

Monday, July 13th, 2009

This site may, or may not, be here the next time you visit. It’s that time of year again when I have to renew my hosting package for another year, and this year the cost is somewhat prohibitive. It costs me over $100/year to maintain this site, and I think there are some better options out there. Hopefully this site will continue to exist in some fashion, and I’ll try to make it easy to find. If I do it right, I will be able to forward folks from thebossfamily.com over to my new site URL, whatever that may be. I can easily replicate all of the posts that I have here, over to http://thebossfamily.squarespace.com. The SquareSpace site costs just a little less than what I’m currently paying, but it’s monthly and there’s no contract, so I like that. What is a little harder to convert, are all the images contained in the individual posts. The images exist in folders on my existing web host, and I would need to somehow copy all those over to my new host, and then correctly map the URL over to the new images location. Anyway, that’s a little nerdy and I apologize for that descent into geek speak.

This is just a heads up…this site is likely to look a little different next time you see it. If you’re not automatically sent to the new site the next time you visit, send me an email and I’ll send you a link.

UPDATE:

It seems that maybe I won’t be switching web hosts after all. I went to cancel my hosting package with iPowerweb and as soon as I clicked on the “cancel” button, a box popped up with a question…”Would you like to save 60%?” Duh. Yeah, I would like to save 60%. So it appears that instead of paying $107/yr for hosting, I can pay $47.40. Now, I’m a little pissed that I had to threaten to cancel my service in order to get this offer, but I’m not quite pissed enough to go on switching. This blog will stay put for now.

New Videos

Howdy ho!

I’ve posted a few new videos over on my YouTube channel. They’re from our day at Michigan’s Adventure. The kiddos had a great time. The weather was perfect and the water park was great, but we missed our younger two as they were at home with grandma.
