Cool Bunks

CoolBunks

I caught this picture online today. I thought this was a really cool example of built-in bunk beds. These seem to be a really great use of space and very practical. They look great too.

Another picture of some cool bunks from the same architect. This is the sort of setup we need in our house with all these kids!

From Dining Area Expansion 2010

Still not a lot of progress on the expansion of our dining area, but the boys have certainly been enjoying their access to my tools. The most recent photos show the end of a wall that needed to be finished off. I used birch plywood (what else?) to finish off the area and tidy things up.

Lights

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Here’s a pic of the lights that I hope to use in our new and improved dining area. What I’d like to do is use exposed conduit to hook 3 of them together over a long, rectangular dining table. Exposed conduit may seem like an odd choice, but I like industrial things. I know I’ll never live in a loft downtown, but that doesn’t mean I can’t create that same look and feel in small ways. btw, these are $22.86 at Amazon.

Dining Table Design

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

As part of our dining room remodel, we’re going to need a new table. Currently we use a 60” square table, as it maximizes the seating space in our small breakfast nook. Our new space will be rectangular, and so will accommodate a longer table, and, we’re hoping, a bunch more people. I saw this workbench design on Fine Woodworking, and thought I might be able to modify it for use as a dining table. What think ye?

I would make the overhangs larger to allow seating on each end. I like the use of industrial materials in residential space, and I like being able to see the mechanical bones of an object. Also, our budget for this remodel is roughly ZERO dollars, and I have a lot of free plywood to use up. I’m thinking one of these, about 10 feet long, would accommodate a bunch of Boss’.

Kitchen/Dining Remodel

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Hi there.

The Boss’ are currently up to their necks in a small remodel. It’s challenging trying to get anything done with the little ones under foot, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Jack, especially, is learning a lot. We thought he was taking a nap the other day and we heard a bump in his room. Lindy went in and found that he had pried the trim off of his bedroom window with a flat head screw driver. More pictures coming soon.

Here’s a brief video of our new piglets. They’re starting to get comfortable in their new home.

Eggs

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

The size of our laying hens is increasing! Our 11 hens had been having a tough time keeping up with demand since we were selling about 6 dozen eggs per week to family and friends. In fact, we weren’t able to enjoy any of the eggs ourselves because we’d been selling everything they could produce.

I’d been considering buying some more chicks this spring, and adding them to the flock when they were laying age, but that would mean waiting another six or seven months. On a lark, I checked craigslist.com and found someone selling one year old Isa Brown chickens. I don’t know why you’d sell a chicken at precisely the time that it becomes productive, but I wasn’t going to complain. I bought a dozen of the birds and put them right in with my flock.

I’m glad to say they’re doing great. I had to hurriedly throw together an outside run to contain them all. Last year we let the chickens run free for the most part, but with lots of kiddos running around with bare feet in the summer, we wanted to keep them confined to a specific area. I used a total of 180 feet of chicken wire, so I think they have a nice comfortable space to scratch around in.

Now we’re collecting about 20 eggs per day. More than enough to meet our outside demand, and still have plenty for ourselves.
